Biography

John has been the MP for Leyton and Wanstead since 2010 and was re-elected on June 8th 2017 with a majority of 22,500 and with 70 per cent of the vote – both figures were the highest ever achieved by any MP for Leyton and Wanstead or Leyton since 1918.

Although he grew up in Yorkshire, John has lived in London and the south east since the age of 18. He has been a journalist and a trade union officer and between 1997 and 2005 he was the MP for Hornchurch in east London.

He holds four advice surgeries per month in Leytonstone and Leyton libraries and in Wanstead House, as well as street surgeries, coffee mornings and other community events.

John has also been the chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party since the beginning of 2015.

Among many local campaigns, John fought to stop the removal of two fire engines due to government cuts and is still campaigning for their return. He has also campaigned to prevent cuts to local police services and to maintain services at Whipps Cross Hospital.

He successfully fought to save Leyton Green Clinic and also campaigned against the closure of two remaining wards of what was Wanstead Hospital (sadly, local health tsars succeeded in shutting Wanstead).

John has also campaigned against concentrated over-flying by aircraft flying to and from London City and Heathrow.

He has visited every school in Leyton and Wanstead and regularly visits local schools and Leyton Sixth Form College. Students and community groups frequently visit him in parliament and he often visits local mosques, churches and other community institutions.

John is married and has four children. In his spare time, he enjoys sports of all kinds, in particular swimming, cycling and cricket. As a child, he enjoyed a very brief cameo in the film The Railway Children.
